Bioluminescence in the city of New York City

Luminescent lighting is different from other types of lighting such as fluorescence and phosphorescence, because it is the emission of light by a substance caused by physical or chemical means that releases very little heat. Fluorescent light emits around 90% of its energy through heat, while luminescent light emits approximately 30% of its energy through heat. This leaves 60% more energy to emit light than florescent. Out of the different types of luminescent lighting, chemiluminescence, bioiluminescence, electroiluminescencs, and triboiluminecsence, I believe that bioiluminiescence would be the best bet for providing light for New York City.

I ultimately chose bioiluminescence, because it is a more ntural process than that of my runner up, chemiluminisecnece. While chemiluminescncee is caused by artificially mixing chemicals to create light, bioiluminisnce is light created by living organisms. Bioiluminescence in an organism is created by the protein or pigment luciferin. Luciferin stores energy in the form of excited electrons. The enzyme luciferase speeds up the reaction of emitting light by freeing the electrons from their bonds. Once they are free, the electrons become less energetic causing them to release energy in the form of light.

Some efficient uses for bioiluminescence are with plants and trees. Bioiluminated trees and provide lighting for streets and highways. Bioiluminated plants can provide as lighting for homes and other smaller spaces. Having these areas of light will serve an alternative purpose of providing more oxygen in the atmosphere as well as show humans the importance of the nature around us.
